I was on the road to Utah for my 29th Birthday. Kevin and the kids were with me and Kev had to stop in Twin Bridges for a work meeting. So I was left to entertain the kids in a small town for an hour and a half. We had already stopped to eat lunch. The restaurant had on their menu “organs and onions” and ”cow patties”, and it read on the front that ”Most people who have eaten here have gone on to lead healthy and happy lives.” :) I passed on the organs and opted to eat a corndog.
It was cold out and not much to do, so I took the kids to ”The Shack”, a small restaurant that looked like it had some good icecream. There was only a couple people inside and the kids had been in the car for a couple hours, so I just let them take off. In the back corner of the restaurant behind one of the tables was a hot coal stove. I didn’t even see it. Paxton went right up to it and put his right hand on it and almost his face. A man jumped up and said “he just touched the stove” and Pax just started wailing in pain. It was awful. Each of his little fingers blistered up and the top part of his palm. Everyone was looking at me like I was the mother of the year. I couldn’t comfort Pax and so I just started bawling. I ran over to a house that I knew the lady was a member of my church and she helped me calm him down. We just had to stand in the cold because every time we went inside he screamed from the warmth. While I was holding Pax in the 20 degree weather, Anessa went inside to use the bathroom and missed the toilet. She did however manage to go all over the floor, her pants, her shoes, her coat……happy birthday to me…happy birthday to me….
There was no clinic or hospital around, so we took off and Pax eventually fell asleep. When we got to Rexburg we took him to the clinic where they removed all his blisters while he screamed. I almost passed out from hearing the screaming. Kids are so resilient though, because once his hand was wrapped you could tell he felt so much better and he was up and running.
I had cried so much that day. I was exhausted. That night though I was able to get on a computer and find that I had email after email from people for my birthday. I don’t think I’d ever gotten so many in my life and I needed it. I just have to say thank you so much for the kind birthday comments and emails. It meant so much. More than I can even say. So thank you! (And just so you know, the days after were really great.)
